What is SOAP? • Standards of Academic Progress • 5 Levels • 4 Academic Restrictions • GPA less than 2.00 – C grade average • Attempted a minimum of 12 credit hours • Counselor Intervention required • Student’s account is blocked • Student is unable to register or make schedule changes
Previous SOAP practice • Students were notified of restriction • Required one-on-one intervention with counselor for all SOAP statuses • Students were recommended to meet with Advising following counselor intervention
The beginning of assessment • Administrative recommendation based on the following observations: • Student to counselor ratio • High volume of students • Wait times
Informal groups • Groups were formed as students walked in • Guidelines or format were not defined • Groups included all type of SOAP statuses • Groups were facilitated only by counselors • Groups conducted in classrooms with no computers
Initial Academic Success Workshop • Observational assessment by counselors • Created ASW committee of counselors to formalize: • Sign-in process • Counseling Outline and PowerPoint • First attempt at formal assessment • Workshop conducted in classrooms with computers • Academic Advisors added to workshop
Revised ASW • Through Advising and Counseling evaluation • Created formal ASW Team with counselors AND advisors • Created a college-wide Continuous Improvement Objective/Results (CIOR) • a process connected to the institution’s strategic planning efforts • Counseling and Advising learning outcomes created
Continuous Improvement Objective • Develop and implement tracking system and assessment tools to assess academic progress, student’s knowledge of college policies affecting their academic standing, students’ understanding of processes for developing an effective plan, and quality of student experience for SOAP students attending an Academic Success Workshop.
Revised ASW • Formalized process and procedures • Limited to first-time Academic Caution students • Scheduled ASW sessions • More structured alert system • More effective sign-in process • Advising presentation included in PowerPoint
First Assessment • Developed first web-based Survey • Original assessment abandoned • Help from our Institutional Research Office • Survey added to favorites on all computers • Counseling questions only
Counseling Learning Outcomes Students will: • recognize SOAP status level • identify semester GPA/cumulative GPA • describe the impact of their next semester • identify challenges to successful academic progress • identify strategies for improvement • demonstrate an understanding of college policies • identify resources to assist academic success
Survey Results • Compared survey results to learning outcomes • Adjusted presentation and procedures as needed • Limited the number of students in workshop • Analyzed survey • Created revised survey • Adjusted questions to meet reading levels • Added advising questions based on Advising Outcomes
Learning Outcomes for Advising Students will: • identify the purpose of Academic Advising • identify educational goals (career, transfer) • identify course sequence and prerequisites • identify course selection in compliance with academic goal
Through assessment Previous Practice Improved Current Practices Students are placed into groups Assigned ASW meetings Placed a limit on amount of students in workshop Consistent presentation Academic advisor meet with students in workshop Assess students after each workshop Continue to assess in order to improve workshops • Counseling met with each student individually • Students seen on walk in basis • Long waiting time • No formal consistent intervention format • Optional advising assistance • No formal assessments
