What is my child doing in Language Arts? • There are 3 ways to check what we are working on in class: • Our class website • Q • Your child’s Language Arts notebook.
Class website • Go to Centennial’s Website • Click Teacher pages • Click class homepage or 2013/ 2014 Language Arts 2H Assignments • I update the website at least once a week. • This Power Point is available there for you to revisit.
Check Your Child’s Grades… Q I print grades for students at the end of every week for students to see. I recommend that students and parents check the website a few times a week. I update grades at least 3 times a week.
Language Arts Notebook / Journals • Must bring Language Arts Notebook Everyday! • Language Arts notebook for agenda, journal entries, and lecture notes. • They must complete the notes, agenda, and journal entry if returning from an absence. • These are checked at the end of each quarter! (100pts)

Outside Reading 500 pages / quarter 1 book report / quarter Book talks each quarter 1 book must be from my book list! First Book Report due 9/27 Tuesday
When is my child’s book talk? • See what your son or daughter signed up to read. List is on the cabinet. • See the book talk interview date. Students may not make up a missed interview. The only exception is an excused absence. • Students may always conduct a book talk earlier then the sign up date. • See schedule posted on the cabinet.
Common Core • This year’s instruction and learning will look different this year as we transition to the new Common Core Standards. • Students should be prepared for more writing, non-fiction expository texts, critical thinking, and 21st century skills.
Students have been working on 2 projects. • Good Earth Media Connection and Power Point presentation.. 21st Century Skill: Access and evaluate information • Access information efficiently (time) and effectively (sources) • Evaluate information critically and competently • Use and manage information • Use information accurately and creatively for the issue or problem at hand • Manage the flow of information from a wide variety of sources • Apply a fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the access and use of information
Students have been working on 2 projects. • Public Service Announcement inspired by their Good Earth theme. 21 st Century Skill: Analyze media • Understand both how and why media messages are constructed, and for what purposes • Examine how individuals interpret messages differently, how values and points of view are include or excluded and how media can influence beliefs and behaviors • Apply a fundamental understanding of the ethical and legal issues surrounding the access and use of media • Create media products • Understand and utilize the most appropriate expressions and interpretations in diverse, multicultural environments
Summer Reading Assignment • The summer reading assignment was collected and is currently being graded. • Due to large classes, I still need a couple more weeks to grade them. Thank you for your understanding.
Writing this year: • CAHSEE prep • AP prep • Common Core • Writing for various mediums
CAHSEEHigh School Exit Exam • Language Arts and Math tests for sophomores in March 2014.

Late Policy • Major Projects, essays, book reports, research projects etc: • 1 Day late-1 letter grade • 2 Days Late-2 letter grades • 3 days late-no credit • All other daily assignments will lose 10 % per day late
