  4. 1. 14th Amendment • Ratified in July, 1868: CITIZENSHIP • Provide a constitutional guarantee of the rights and security of freed people. 2. 15th Amendment • Ratified in 1870: VOTE • The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of slavery.

  5. 3. Freedmen’s Bureau (1865) • WORKED TO PROTECT BLACK RIGHTS IN THE SOUTH. • PROVIDED: EMPLOYMENT, MEDICAL CARE AND EDUCATION

  6. 4. Black Codes • Purpose: • Guarantee stable labor supply now that blacks were liberated. • Forced many blacks to become sharecroppers[tenant farmers].

  7. 5. JIM CROW LAWS • EST. IN THE 1880s. GOV’T CREATED A LAW THE MADE FACILITIES SEPARATE BUT EQUAL.
