Objectives Today’s objectives are to show • How to use the Standards Aligned System to align curriculum. • How to use 21st Century skills in both lessons and assessment. • How and where you can find professional development for FCS
Clear Standards Describe what all students need to know and be able to accomplish with increased complexity. Family and Consumer Sciences standards, in addition to Math, and Reading standards would be used to aid in your descriptions.
An overall judgment of progress made at the end of instruction. Examples include: Project Based Learning: PowerPoint Presentations Videos Posters/Collages Podcasts Quizzes Tests Summative Assessment
Used by teachers and students during instruction to provide feedback. Examples include: At The Bells Classwork CPS units Cooperative Learning Games Quiz and Test Reviews More examples include response cards, think-pair-share, Popsicle sticks for open-ended questions, thumbs up thumbs down and numbered heads Formative Assessment
Diagnostic Assessment • Ascertaining the students knowledge prior to instruction aids the teacher in finding the students strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills. To help determine these teachers can use information obtained from outside sources than analysis by the teacher on a student and class basis. • This will be discussed more closely in intervention.
Designed to provide feedback periodically on students performance and how the student is progressing towards proficiency on grade level standards. At Pocono Mountain we use 4Sight tests to measure a students progress. Benchmark Assessment

Big Ideas A set of declarative statements of lasting knowledge for all students at all grade/course levels. Used to help students make connections and make sense of ideas, concepts, skills– for sustained understanding and accomplish higher levels of learning. Answer the question: What are the important concepts in this area?

Concepts • Describe what students should know as a result of this instruction, specific to grade level. • Since the purpose is to provide focus for the curriculum, only major concepts should be included. • Your curriculum objectives would be a wonderful way to describe the concepts. Competencies Describe what students should be able to do as a result of this instruction, specific to grade level. Begin with identification of the culminating competencies for each grade/course. Should be limited in number and be all encompassing. What is really important – the outcome of the course or grade.
Essential Questions Questions connected to the SAS framework and specifically linked to the Big Ideas. They should frame student inquiry and promote critical thinking. They should assist in learning transfer. Ask questions using your competencies as your guide. For Example: Competency D. Evaluate the role of consumer rights and responsibilities in the resolution of a consumer problem through the practical reasoning process. An Essential question might be “How do you write a complaint letter?”

Exemplars Exemplars are performance tasks and can be used for assessment, instruction as well as professional development. Exemplars provide educators with a concrete example of assessing students' understanding of the big ideas, concepts and competencies.

Interventions • Using Performance tracker to research students assessments on standards based materials. • Allows accommodations and scaffolding to be done to challenge every child. • Also insures that the standards are being met. • In addition, other outside sources such as IEP’s and characteristics of learning styles etc.
