Fathers, Work and Family:The Challenges for Today’s Dads and How Workplaces, Researchers and Society Can Respond Scott Behson Fairleigh Dickinson University, USA AOM, August 2013
Parallels to Women’s Work-Family Challenges • Women face barriers at work/society as they expand into non-traditional role • Despite more paid work, still expected to be primary caretaker and “all-in” for family
Men’s Work-Family Challenges • Men face barriers at home/society as they expand into non-traditional role • Despite more home involvement, still expected to be primary provider and “all-in” for career • Flexibility stigma for men
Families’ Work-Family Challenge • 60%+ of families are dual-earner • Been true for almost 30 years • Workplace structures and expectations haven’t adapted • Incomes have stagnated • Many other aspects of society haven’t either
Paternity Leave: Almost none took formal PL 75% took off one week or less 16% did not take any -BCCWF, New Dads Study
Agenda for Future Research • Lots of research on Work-Family • Lots of research on Fatherhood and the benefits of present, involved dads • Research specifically targeted to men’s unique work-family issues • Boston College Center for Work and Family • UC Hastings Workplace Flexibility Stigma Working Group • UC Berkeley Positive Psychology
Potential research questions: • What factors at work and at home help men avail themselves of paternity leave, formal or informal accommodations? • How are psychological stressors and workplace barriers different for men and women? • Best practices for workplace/time flexibility • Comparative public policy • What dads can do both at work and home for better balance
Agenda for Workplaces • Recognize WF is a men’s issue, too • Make it safer for men to visibly act • Visible role models • Beyond formal programs: Autonomy & Flexibility • Informal accommodations • “less rigid form of flexibility” • Work-Family Culture • Time Demands • Career Consequences • Managerial Support
