FIIF Management Board Technology Transfer Status May 2012 A. Kellner, May23rd, 2012
Technology Transfer Phases The long time-to-maturity of the development of the fusion power plant technologies and the related engineering know-how leads to 2 transfer phases • Phase 1: • transfer of technologies • for spin-off generation in • non-fusion applications • to startups and SMEs • Phase 2: • transfer of technologies and • engineering, integration and ops • know-how to build power plants • to potential power plant • builders
Phase 1: Transfer Organisation and Processes Set up a Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO) coordinating: a Technology Transfer Network (TTN) of technology brokers which get EU contracts (basic reimbursement and incentives) to pro-actively foster the knowledge dissemination opportunities announced on a web-based Technology Market Place matching technology push and business pull Business Incubation Centers helping start-ups technologically and legally funding support for start-ups, e.g. outsourced to Venture Capital companies
Phase 2: Transfer Organisation and Processes Extend the Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO) to coordinate: the short-term establishment of a knowledge management system to capture the knowledge (*)acquired during the JET and ITER construction in configuration-managed, structured formats easily retrievable in later times in the long run the placement of a contract to a consortium of potential power plant builders with the relevant associations as subcontractors for the pre-competitive transfer of know- how on technologies, engineering, integration, and operations (*) Comprising, apart from explicitly documented knowledge, in particular the implicit knowledge in the minds of staff w.r.t. best practices, lessons learned on mishaps, experience gained in manufacturing, integration and operations, etc.
Current Status Phase 1: • 2-years pilot project piggy-back „on top“ of the ESA process and institutions • Basic agreement with ESA reached • Currently under EC-internal preparation Phase 2: • Pilot of a Lessons Learned System currently under development in F4E contract and procurement unit • Focused on knowledge sharing w.r.t. handling procurement procedures
