  20. What made the two valuable possessions of both Della and James so special? Della’s hair was her special physical quality others admired. James’s watch was a family treasure.

  21. What made the two valuable possessions of both Della and James so special? Both possessions were not purchased but were either natural or inherited. With so little money, these possessions represented the only real source of pride and wealth.

  22. What made the two valuable possessions of both Della and James so special? Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.

  23. What made the two valuable possessions of both Della and James so special? Had the queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty’s jewels and gifts.

  25. What is the significance of the title The Gift of the Magi? In Christianity, it is believed that three wise men, Magi, traveled a great distance following a bright star to the birth place of Jesus. These wise men, Magi, presented the infant Jesus special gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

  28. What makes this story so powerful? The irony of both giving up their prized possessions to get money for the other’s gift. The situational irony that surprises the reader to learn that James has sold his watch for hair combs.

  29. What makes this story so powerful? The ending that O. Henry presents tying these two to a significant religious event and proclaiming: But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.

  30. What lessons did you learn from this story? Love is a depth of feeling that eliminates selfishness and self-centered actions and only shows concern for the loved one.

  31. What lessons did you learn from this story? We see love in the action of others and not in their words.

  32. What lessons did you learn from this story? When both people in a relationship have this concern only for the other, then the love is enduring because one always thinks of the other first.
