  2. John Jay’s Treaty 1794 • Occurred after the victory of Fallen Timbers • General Wayne • Britain agreed on evacuate their posts in the North west Territory. • America anger with the agreement with Britain. • Washington would not go for a third term. • John Adams would move to office.

  3. XYZ Affair • France Upset • Jay treaty with Britain was violation against French – American alliance. • France would fight back: • Refuse to receive the new American ambassador • Seized American ships bound for Britain. • And have naval war battles between American ships and France ships. • President Adams sent a delegation for French foreign minster Tayllrard. • Three low-level official (X-Y-Z) would bribe to see Tayllrard. • Create anit-french feelings.

  4. Alien and Sedition Acts • Paranoid about French spies flourished. • Supported by Federalist Party • Alien and Sedition Acts outlined: • Residence requirement for America want from 5yrs. to 14yrs. • President to deport or jail any alien considered undesirable or against the government. • Many Democratic-Republicans would be jailed. • Violation of the 1st Amendment rights?

VA and KY Resolutions • Jefferson and Madison solution to the Alien and Sedition act. • Declaring that states legislatures had the right to nullify, or consider void, any act of Congress to be unconstitutional. • Nullification: consider void any act unconstitutional. • Controversy would lead to Jefferson’s election of 1800. Chosen by Senate. • What law placed in office, the removal of the national bank.

Louisiana Purchase • Purchased from Napoleon of France by Thomas Jefferson. • Louisiana Purchase: extending from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains • Cost: 15 million. • By doing this, Jefferson created further more power to the federal (national government); • But did decrease the influence of the Bank of US.

  7. Embargo of 1807 • Intended to hurt The British economically; instead hurt U.S. Merchants. • Jefferson issued it to stop impressments avoid war. • Embargo: a ban on exporting products to other countries. • Impressments: practice of seizing Americans at sea and drafting them into the British Navy.

  8. Parties on opposite sides. • Federalist opposed the embargo: • Severely hurt there trade • Opposed the War of 1812. • Democratic – Republicans favored war: • “War hawks” John C. Calhoun and other southern fighters. • National pride • Land Hunger • Federalists party died out as a result: • Opposition to the war • Democratic-Republicans adaptation of national bank and protective tariff after War of 1812.
