THE ROOT OF REPENTANCE “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4) Our carnal nature resists repentance. It cannot accept that we could do something wrong. God is the One “guiding us”; He drives us to repentance. Therefore, repentance is a gift from God. The Holy Spirit generates a conviction of sin in us so we may come to Jesus, the source of forgiveness.

TWO KINDS OF REPENTANCE “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death” (2 Corinthians 7:10 NIV) Repentance is a sorrow feeling for something we did but we wish we didn’t do. The reason of our repentance differentiates between true and false repentance; it can be either “godly sorrow” or “worldly sorrow”.

  4. TRUE REPENTANCE “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds” (Acts 26:19-20) The ingredients for true repentance may be found in Paul’s conversion: There is a firm decision of abandoning sin and changing our behavior. Remembering our forgiven sins does not produce a depressive feeling but a desire to praise God for His love. That desire drives us to testify to Jesus’ forgiving power before others.

  5. “The examples in God’s word of genuine repentance and humiliation reveal a spirit of confession in which there is no excuse for sin or attempt at self-justification. Paul did not seek to shield himself; he paints his sin in its darkest hue, not attempting to lessen his guilt … He does not hesitate to declare that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” 1 Timothy 1:15” E.G.W.   6. FALSE REPENTANCE What do the next repentance stories have in common? None felt guilty for their sins but for the consequences of them.

  7. DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN TRUE AND FALSE REPENTANCE

  8. WHAT IS CONFESSION? Confessionvalidatesourrepentance. The Holy Spirit does not give us vague feelings of guilt. He convicts us of our definite shortcomings. Confession must be specific: “Lord, I did this wrong. I have sinned and I want You to forgive this sin”. Genuine confession goes beyond words. “Confession will not be acceptable to God without sincere repentance and reformation. There must be decided changes in the life; everything offensive to God must be put away. This will be the result of genuine sorrow for sin” E.G.W. (Steps to Christ, cp. 4, pg. 39)

  9. WHAT BENEFITS DOES CONFESSION BRING? In Psalm 32, David wrote about the feelings before and after confessing his sin —even the physical changes he felt. BEFORE CONFESSING AFTER HIS CONFESSION “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer”(Psalm 32:3-4 NIV) “Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. You are my hiding place; You will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance… Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!” (Psalm 32:6-7, 11 NIV) “Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin” (Psalm 32:5 NIV)
