Aims of the Evening • Overview of the curriculum • Expectations of Year 1 • Please save all questions until the end
General procedures • 8.55 am – 3.15 pm (not 3.10 pm as all children are now five) • Register is at 9.00 am – late arrivals must go through the office as classroom doors have to be locked • Pupils should be in school promptly and should not arrive before 8.45am • Please ensure you supervise your child until the bell has rung • Scooters and bikes need to be pushed in the playground • No trim trail • Absence procedure – ring office, letter on return • Year 1 Cloakrooms • Collecting children at the end of the day - If a child has not been collected by 3.20pm (or more than 5 minutes after the end of the session), they will be transferred to our After School Club. A charge will be applied.
Uniform • Autumn uniform must be worn from half term • No polo shirts or summer dresses • Children are responsible for their own items • Please ensure each item is clearly named • Long hair needs to be tied back • No jewellery, tattoos, nail varnish or extreme haircuts. Children wearing earrings, even if covered, cannot take part in P.E. • Lost property – returned to class if item is named. If not, it goes into the lost property bin by the bike shed.
Equipment • We provide everything they need for completing their work • Book Bag – daily please (your child will empty their homework and reading books into a tray) • Water bottles – named please. • Please don’t allow your child to bring any toys into school unless they have been invited to do so.
Physical Education • P.E. Monday (indoor) and Tuesday (outdoor) • PE Kit – this should be brought to school on a MONDAY and taken home on a FRIDAY. • Please ensure each item is clearly named. • The PE kit should consist of: • White Hurst Park T-shirt, green shorts, trainers that fit (ideally Velcro), socks, tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirt, PE KIT bag.
National Curriculum • Your child is now either working towards or now following expectations from the new 2014 National Curriculum. • This phase is called Key Stage One which includes four classes – years one and two. • Website – • www.hurst-park.surrey.sch.uk/curriculum
Daily Routine • Free flow environment • We are working towards a more formal way of learning, where your child will be taught a whole class Maths and English lesson every day • Green for growth and pink for praise • Foundation subjects • Class management –stickers, praise, house points • Behaviour Policy –miss some of playtime, speak to deputy head/headteacher, contact with parents (where necessary) • Playtimes – outdoor equipment at lunchtime and music/dance twice a week.
Reading • The book banding system that Hurst Park uses is closely linked with the National Curriculum • Comprehension is hugely important and we will share some of the questions that support this with you in the yellow books • We aim for every child to have been read with every day during year 1
Phonics • National Phonics Screening Test in June for Year One • Meeting about it later in the year • Phonics taught using Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds • We aim for the children to do Phonics focused activities every day
Homework • Reading homework will be sent home this week • Mathletics homework will start after half term • Homework Policy on website
FAST Maths sessions will start once a week after half term where the children will be tested on their Key Instant Recall Facts. • We will use a challenge sheet to test the children which will be relevant to the child’s ability. • The children will be given a certain time limit during which to complete the test. • This will come home on a weekly basis so you can see what they need to practise next or continue to practise if working on the same facts.
Trips • Toys workshop (in school) • Hopefully a visit to Hounslow Urban Farm • Church visit to school • Brooklands Museum
How can you help your child? • Stay involved and feel free to contact me with any questions and concerns • Make sure your child is getting plenty of sleep and is ready for school each day • Help your child with their homework • Read with your child every night • Teach your child to be responsible for their actions and their schoolwork • Website • Social Media • PTA – class reps
