Our school… • ~1800 students • ~150 staff • Shared campus with Catholic School Board: • 1700 students • 145 staff
Restorative Practice is so Important for Education! Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy Adapted from: Hume, Karen: Start Where They Are Pg. 92
Our goal @ richardson • To build community and strengthen relationships • To repair relationships when harm has been caused • To encourage positive, healthy conversations • TO CREATE A BUILDING WHERE EVERYONE FEELS SAFE, CONNECTED, AND READY TO LEARN!
STAFF is the KEY! We cannot implement these ideas without the support of our staff WHERE Did WE BEGIN???
Our first steps… • Staff: - All Richardson staff trained in R.P. Framework (PD Day) • Optional staff Circle Training (40 staff) • Circles used in staff meetings • Students: - Grade level assemblies for all grades • Parents: - Parent workshop offered by Bruce Schenk • Community: - R.P. Team presented to Ajax Youth Project (police, social workers, community leaders, and administrators from DDSB and DCDSB)
As of February 2009… • Richardson Restorative Practice Team expanded to include staff from various departments • IIRP Canada/DDSB posters (Restorative Questions and Practice Domains) in every classroom, main office, guidance, and library, allowing for common language throughout the school • 8 Richardson staff, DDSB trained as R.P. Facilitators • 40 Richardson staff trained in R.P. classroom circles • Full-time Restorative Practice classroom available for booking • Dedicated Restorative Practice In-house Expert as a support for staff, students and administration
As of February 2009… • Monthly web-site article • On-call teacher list for Restorative Conversations • Office using formal conferences and circles to deal with incidents • Monthly open-forum meetings for staff to discuss Restorative Practice • Regular collaboration with Bruce Schenk of the IIRP Canada for constant feedback and fine-tuning • Preparing a Grade 9 “retreat day” for September 09
It’s working! • Classrooms frequently organized into circles • Fewer office referrals • Quieter/calmer office environment as noticed by administration • Students, parents, and teachers requesting the use of circles in repairing damaged relationships in the classrooms, the main office, the guidance office and most recently, in the community
data • # of suspensions • OSSLT and EQAO results • Failures • Teacher feedback • # of charges (?)
