Service Learning Erin Duede 2005-2006
Where I volunteered: • Goodwill • Goodwill Career Center • Magnolia Manor • Holly Hill Nursing Home
Magnolia Manor • Magnolia Manor serves older adults. Their goal is to provide exceptional retirement communities located throughout South Georgia for those who need them. • Their services include a wide variety of independent retirement living options, plus assisted living, skilled nursing care, rehabilitation and therapy and even specialty Alzheimer’s care.
What I did… • The people in charge of Magnolia Manor were extremely nice. They just told me to walk up and down the halls and talk to everyone. All of the residents were extremely nice. They all wanted to tell me their whole life story! It was a lot of fun because I felt as close to them as I do to my own grandparents!
Goodwill • Goodwill provides job training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities through its organizations around the world. • Last year, Goodwill provided employment and training services to more than 720,000 individuals.
What I did… • While volunteering at Goodwill, they needed me to help organize everything on the store floor. I did things from removing empty hangers from the racks to straightening up the shelves of books.
Career Center at Goodwill • The career center is a separate section of Goodwill. In the career center they help people use computers, make resumes, and help them find jobs. • While volunteering in the career center, they also needed help with organization. I emptied out their drawers and filed papers.
Holly Hill Nursing Home • Holly Hill assists elders by providing them with healthcare, dental services, housekeeping, nurses and even speech and language pathologists.
My main task was to paint the women's nails. I also got to visit with them and keep them company. Later on in the day, I got to help out with snack time giving them the appropriate treat. What I did…
Why volunteering is important to me: • It allows me to give back to my community and help those who are less fortunate, and gives me a great sense of accomplishment. It also makes me a more well-rounded individual. • Volunteering at Holly Hill and Magnolia Manor showed me how much the elders really appreciate young people coming out and showing our support. It made me feel like I made a difference.
