FIRST STEP TO PRODUCE GOOD THESIS Mohd Talib Latif
RESEARCH Planning • Start when you start your research
GOOD RESEARCH • RESEARCH QUESTION • Hypothesis • Objectives • Conclusion – Answer your objectives
When you write: • Always think about READER – people who will read your thesis
FLOW OF WORK? • Introduction • Literature Review • Methodology • Data • Results and Discussion • Conclusion • Abstract
Introduction • Very important part of the thesis • Explain on problem statement • Latest information - references • What gap you want to fill? • What question you want to answer!! • Research objectives No more – “Air quality is…………..” – so boring ma!
The flow of introduction • Make a paragraph a unit of composition • A A-B B-C • Alivenees of reader to one paragraph to another • From general to specific
Remember KISS Keep It Simple, Stupid! (Steve Job) Do not write long sentences until you yourself hard to understand
You will never write a good thesis if you not read articles/books related to your research
LITERATURE REVIEW • Complete information on your research background (Cover all your research topic) • Separate into relevant sub-topics • Include diagrams or tables (with sources!) • Make sure that you include all important researches related to topic (Show reader that you have read many references!) • All information need to back up with REFERENCES (This is Literature Review!!!!!!!!!!!!) Do not copy blindly from your seniors! Need a lot of reading!
Research Methodology • Detail Procedures • -Instrument (Brand, Version, Product, Country) • -Chemicals (Brand, Type, etc) • Able to repeat by another researchers • Put reference if you take from other references. • Produce good map (scale, north indicator etc) Do not copy blindly from your seniors!
Data (MAIN AND SUPPORT DATA) • Try to reorganise your main data • Mean, range (Min-Max), Std etc. • Main data should be presented FIRST • Support Data • Mean, range (Min-Max), Std etc. • Main data should be presented FIRST • Statistical Analyses (Correlation, ANOVA etc)
Results and discussion • Main data should be presented and discuss first (Base on the descriptive table) • Discuss in good flow • Main data (try to discuss all important information) - range - max - min - support by explanation - comparison with other research (references) • Avoid too many assumption-support your argument with good references/data
Results and discussion • Explain data • Give reason • Compare with other
COMPARE INTERNAL DATA WITH STATISTICAL EVIDENCE • T –test • ANOVA • Correlation matrix • Cluster • HACA • PCA Analysis
Support Data • Compare and Correlate with main data • Explain why? • One paragraph is for one point of discussion.
Conclusion • Must answer you objectives! • Conclude the main finding • Important results • Implication from the results • Give suggestion
ABSTRACT • Self explain • Consist of: • Problem statement • Objectives • Main methodology • Main finding • Conclusion • Suggestion. • Your abstract should cover your research!!!
TABLE AND FIGURE • Produce good table • Produce clear figure
DIAGRAMS AND TABLES • Tables • should be necessary • not repeat the diagrams • is data be needed by reader • usable measurements, e.g. phyiscal constants, b.p., solubility etc • large tables of environmental data are undesirable (add as on-line files) • Self explain! Need to put legend/Note • Why number is bold!!!
REFERENCE LISTS • Should be up to date • A kind of completeness, but relevant and accessible • Combination new (2014 and high citation) • Acknowledge past achievements – to avoid plagiarism • UKM’s format • PLEASE USE ENDNOTE!
IMPORTANT POINT • DO DIFFERENT FROM YOUR SENIORS • AVOID PLAGIARISM • BE SPECIFIC
REMEMBER Be creative!!! DO DIFFERENT!
BEFORE YOU GRADUATE • Thesis – Soft Copy • Data in Excel (Overall Proper Data) • Endnote File • Sains Malaysiana Paper
