FIRST STEP TO PRODUCE GOOD RESEARCH ARTICLE Mohd Talib Latif
Paper Planning • Start when you start your research
GOOD RESEARCH • QUESTION • Hypothesis • Objective
FLOW OF WORK? • Methodology • Data • Results and Discussion • Introduction • Conclusion • Abstract
Research Methodology • Detail Procedures • -Instrument (Brand, Version, Product, etc) • -Chemicals (Brand, Type, etc) • Able to repeat by another researchers • Put reference if you take from other references. • Produce good map (scale, north indicator etc)
Data (MAIN AND SUPPORT DATA) • Try to reorganise your main data • Mean, range (Min-Max), Std etc. • Main data should be presented FIRST • Support Data • Mean, range (Min-Max), Std etc. • Main data should be presented FIRST • Statistical Analyses (Correlation, ANOVA etc)
Results and discussion • Main data should be presented and discuss first • Discuss in good flow • Main data - range - max - min - support by explanation - comparison with other research
Support Data • Compare and Correlate with main data • Explain why? • One paragraph is for one point of discussion.
Introduction • Very important part of the paper • Explain on problem statement • The main information from the previous research • What gap you want to fill? • What question you want to answer!!
The flow of introduction • Make a paragraph a unit of composition • A A-B B-C • Alivenees of reader to one paragraph to another
Conclusion • Conclude the Main finding • Important results • Implication from the results • Give suggestion
TABLE AND FIGURE • Produce good table • Produce clear figure • Xls (Exel) is a not a good format for you to produce good figures. • Learn to use Illustrator!
HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD Journal • High Impact Journal • International Publisher e.g AAAS (Science), Nature, Elsevier, Springer, RSC, JGE etc
Impact Factor • In ISI Web of Science (Through Portal e-journal – library)
Choose Subject Category Click Submit
What Good Journal NEED • Novelty • International not local • Research Highlight • Cover letter – explain the significant of the paper • Suggestion of 3 reviewers • Good references • Good English • PERFECT!
Research Highlight • We analysed ozone data from nine stations in Klang Valley, Malaysia. > Surface O3 photochemistry exhibits a positive response to an increase in UVb. > O3 concentration showing a negative response to an increase in NO, NO2 and THC. > 47% of the high O3 days was associated with the localized circulation. > Surface O3 also associated with mid-range and long-range transport
COVER LETTER • “Assessment of Air Quality Monitoring Stations in Malaysia Using Environmetric Techniques” • by Doreena Dominick, HafizanJuahir, MohdTalibLatif, Shariffuddin M. Zain and Ahmad ZaharinAris • which we would like to be considered for publication in the Atmospheric Environment. This study applies Hierarchical Agglomerative Cluster Analysis (HACA), Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) to analyze two years’ daily average database for eight selected monitoring stations in Malaysia. Our results indicate that the data from air quality monitoring stations can be categorized into three different clusters base on the background of the stations. The results also found the main contributors of atmospheric pollutants recorded at the selected monitoring stations are motor vehicles which contribute to high amount of PM10 and CO.
REVIEWERs SELECTION • Researcher in your research field –find through SCOPUS/ISI • Researchers who knew your work – through citation on your previous research • Try to avoid people who already published with you • Local and international
