  2. Listening: the key to communication. The aim is to promote the development of understanding and trust.

  3. Listening for more than the presenting problem. Be on the lookout for the deeper issues.

  4. Listening for the story of the baby. Every mother and baby have a unique story.Help to ventilate the story of the baby.

  5. Listening to the parent’s past. Hearing the mother’s cry.

  6. Case 1: A mother with a new baby in the NICU. A bird in the hand?

  7. Listening to the present.

  8. Case 2: The 2 year old on the other side of the room.

  9. Case 3: The young mother reading the Bible.

  10. Listening for “negative” communication. What to do about it.

  11. Look for non-verbal communication. The emotional communication.

  12. Case 4: The up and down baby.

  13. Listen for ambivalence. Ambivalence is common and can be used to move things forward.
