Organelle A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function or job inside a cell
Cell Membrane The thin layer of protein and fat that surrounds the cell- it’s the only way to get in and out of the cell. Factory thinking: Front door of the building
**Warning: Found only in Plant Cells! Cell wall A thick rigid membrane that surrounds a plant cell; provides support Factory Thinking: Brick wall around the building
Cytoplasm The jelly-like material inside a cell in which all the organelles are located- medium for organelle movement Factory Thinking: Hallways and walkways so workers can easily move around
The following are organelles inside of the cell: Don’t forget, organelles function to produce energy, build and transport needed materials and store and recycle wastes
Nucleus Found in both plant and animal cells, it is the part of the cell that contains genetic info (cell directions) Factory Thinking: Command center- The Boss
Nucleolus Organelle inside nucleus where ribosomes are made Factory Thinking: Printers inside the main office printing important documents
Ribosomes Small organelles that make protein Factory Thinking: Important paperwork that must go to the boss
Mitochondria “Powerhouse” of the cell: they produce most of the energy the cell needs Factory Thinking: Fuel tanks needed for powering the machines
Endoplasmic Reticulum A maze of passageways that carries proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another Factory Thinking: Conveyer belts to move along products
Golgi Bodies Receive materials through the ER and then send them to other parts of the cell Factory Thinking: Packaging center or mailroom
** Warning: Found only in Plant Cells Chloroplasts Organelle that captures energy from the sun during photosynthesis to make glucose for the cell Factory Thinking: Solar panels
Vacuoles Large, round, water-filled sacs always found in plant cells, sometimes found in animal cells. In charge of storing food and materials needed for the cell Factory Thinking: Storage closets
Lysosomes Small round structures containing chemicals that break down food and old cell parts (more common in animal cells) Factory Thinking: custodians cleaning up
Bacterial Cells Although similar to plant and animal cells (cell wall, cell membrane), there is on major difference: • No nucleus!!!
