The Troubles • Protestants fully control the north’s government • Irish Catholics face discrimination, lack of jobs, no rights and violence • Catholics restart the IRA. Their goal was an armed campaign against Protestants and unification with Ireland • Protestants form paramilitary organizations like UVF against Catholics & to ensure N. Ireland remains British • Over 3,000 people die during “The Troubles” (30 years)
Good Friday Agreement • 1998: Unionists & Republicans (Sinn Fein) along with the British & Irish Governments signed the Good Friday Peace Accord • Agreement calls for a power-sharing self government in N. Ireland • After the agreement, the IRA ended its campaign of violence • However, DUP (unionist) leader Dr. Ian Paisley refused to enter into a government with Sinn Fein NO SINN FEIN!!
British tell Paisley if he doesn’t share power with Sinn Fein, Britain & Ireland will share direct rule of the north • Paisley agrees to share power & meets with Sinn Fein leaders • Paisley states IRA must give up all weapons for power-sharing • IRA disarms – Paisley still says NO • May 8, 2007 home rule is established in Northern Ireland with Paisley sharing power with former IRA commander Martin McGuinness • May of 2008 Paisley stepped down as head of the DUP NO! “Dr. NO” “Chuckle Brothers”
