  2. Offer vs Serve Breakfast Objectives • Identify the requirements for Offer vs Serve in the School Breakfast Program • Practice identifying meals that meet the requirements of a reimbursable meal • Brainstorm strategies to encourage students to choose and enjoy fruits at breakfast

  3. Offer vs Serve Breakfast • Offer vs Serve is optional at Breakfast for all grade groups • OVS works differently at Breakfast than it does at Lunch

  4. Offer vs Serve Breakfast Important Meal Pattern Reminders that affect OVS • Meat/ Meat Alternates (M/MA) can substitute as a Grain OR count as an Extra • Vegetables can substitute as a Fruit OR count as an extra (Extra = Not counted as a component or item)

Offer vs Serve - Breakfast • Must offer / menu at least 4 food items • Student must select at least 3 food items • For grains (or meat/meat alternate offered for grains) and milk, must select the daily minimum required amount • For the fruit component, the student must select at least ½ cup fruit (and/or vegetable / any combination)

  6. Offer vs Serve At lunch we count components At breakfast we count items Item= A specific food offered within the three food components

  7. Offer vs Serve Grains at Breakfast Counting Grain Items A grain selection may count as an item if the amount equals at least the minimum daily oz eq requirement (1 oz eq for all grade groups)
