E N D
TO do… • Glue in the Challenge Question answer from Activity 49. • Today we are going to begin to work on some activities that “follow-up” on ideas we have learned about in the Plate Tectonics unit. • To set up this activity: • In your table of contents draw a line under activity 49 • Write “Measuring Earthquakes- PRENTICE HALL” in the table of Contents • Copy these vocab words: • P wave- A type of earthquake wave that compresses and expands the ground (particles move in same direction as the direction of the wave’s energy). • S wave- A type of earthquake wave that moves the ground up and down or side to side (particles move perpendicular to the direction the wave’s energy is traveling). • Surface Wave- A type of earthquake wave the happens when P and S waves reach the Earth’s surface (causes the most damage to buildings and structures). • Epicenter- The point on Earth’s surface directly above the earthquake’s focus. • Focus- The point beneath Earth's surface where rock breaks under stress and causes the earthquake. • You will watch two human wave demonstrations (wave 1 and wave 2) • In your journal record your observations for each demonstration.
TO do… • Copy this table in your journal: • Read pages 64 to 66 and fill out the table. • Only the top two rows • In your journal, answer Section Review questions 1, 2 and 4 (p.69).
Watch these demonstrations How the waves compare
TO do… • Read p. 68 and 69 (Locating the Epicenter) • Fill out the bottom column on the table • Use this website and fill out “Finding the Epicenter of an Earthquake” worksheet. • On the back of the worksheetwrite an response that includes” • The differences between a P and S wave • A labeled diagram clarifying your ideas (from #1) • An explanation of how P and S waves are used to calculate the distance from an epicenter. • This will be scored using the Understanding Concepts rubric. **TURN IN THE COMPLETED WORKSHEET TO THE INBOX**
