Keywords and Background Research • Understand your assignment or research goals. • Find background information. • Create a list of keywords to use in your searching strategies.
What is the Internet? • A network of networks, linking computers to computers • Each computer either serves or access and views information • The transport vehicle for the information stored in files or documents on another computer
How Does it All Work? • Each computer talks to each other via the same language (protocols) • With the correct software your computer will be able understand and process (translate) the information so you can understand it.
Brief History of the Internet • 1957: USSR launches Sputnik • 1962: RAND Corporation commissioned by the US Air Force to do a study on how it could maintain its command and control over its missiles and bomber after a nuclear attack. • 1968/1969: ARPANET linking 4 nodes, UC at LA, SRI (Stanford), UC at Santa Barbara, and University of Utah.
Brief History of the Internet • 1972: First email program • 1979: USENET, 56 Kbpd (Dial-up speed) • 1993: Mosaic (first graphical browser) --> Netscape • 1998: Microsoft Explorer Released (June)
What Are Browsers • Simple Explanation: Browsers are the software on your computer to view the Internet / Word Wide Web (WWW).
