  1. Bellringer • Think of at least 3 different species of plants or animals and explain an adaptation that they have acquired to live in their particular environment.

  2. Extreme Adaptations

  3. Adaptations • An adaptation is something about a species that makes it possible for it to live in a particular place in a particular way. • Physical adaptation • Behavioral adaptation • Adaptations occur relative to a species environment.

  4. The Giant Corpse Flower • Amorphophallustitanum • Found in the tropical forests of Sumatra in Indonesia • Flower reaches heights of 6 feet • Plant reaches heights of up to 20 feet • Smells like rotten eggs • Attracts flies and beetles for pollination

  5. Pangolin • Mammal – found in tropical regions of Africa and Asia • Behavioral adaptation - No teeth therefore they swallow small stones and sand to help with digestion • Long sticky tongueup to 16 inches • Scales made of keratin

  6. Arctic Fox • How has the arctic fox adapted to the Arctic? • compact body with short legs, short ears, dense fur, and thickly haired foot pads, which insulate against the cold and provide traction on ice

  7. Adaptations of a desert Cactus • Succulent, water-retaining stems • thick, waxy cuticle and few or no leaves to greatly reduce the losses of water • stems are photosynthetic, so leaves are not required to execute this function • a physiological tolerance of long periods of drought • periodic pattern of growth, productivity, and flowering, which takes advantage of the availability of moisture during the brief, rainy season

  8. Planet People • All planets have different living conditions, or different environments. • Assume people were sent to one of these planets and must adapt to these very different living conditions.

  9. Directions • Each group will be given a planet to create their fantasy environment. • Each group must create a poster that should include all of the information on your direction sheets. • You will have the rest of today’s class and Wednesday to complete this project.

  10. Rubric for Grading • Total of 50 points possible for this poster • 45 – 50 covers all of the bulleted points, explains adaptations clearly and are creative with their material, neat and organized • 35 – 44 covers most of the bulleted points, explains adaptations clearly and are creative with their material, neat and organized • 25 – 34 covers over half of the asked for material and everything is explained clearly and organized • Less than 25 – doesn’t cover half of the material and/or not neat or clearly conveyed
