QUICK SUMMARY • Immunity can be either natural or artificial, innate or acquired=adaptive, and either active or passive. • Active natural (contact with infection): develops slowly, is long term, and antigen specific. • Active artificial (immunization): develops slowly, lasts for several years, and is specific to the antigen for which the immunization was given. • Passive natural (transplacental = mother to child): develops immediately, is temporary, and affects all antigens to which the mother has immunity. • Passive artificial : develops immediately, is temporary, and affects all antigens to which the donor has immunity.
FACTS • are four phases of an immune response: recognition, amplification of defense, attack and suppression. • The body has over 50 million white blood cells that work to protect the body's defense system. • Laughter increases the amount of natural killer cells which destroy tumors and viruses, lowers blood pressure, and increases oxygen in the blood. • The environment plays an important role in affecting our immune response. Toxic substances, air pollution, pesticides and second hand cigarette smoke affects the defense system of our body • Your tongue is germ free only if it is pink. If it is white there is a thin film of bacteria on it.
