  1. Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions Program Information Sheet Month: September 2012 Topic: Alcohol Use and Responsible Drinking Point of Contact: NADAP Phone Number: (901) 874-4204 • Topic Discussion: The legal consumption of alcohol is ok, when it is done responsibly. Alcohol related incidents can hurt your career and affect your family and shipmates. Make sure you have a plan when drinking alcohol. First, always know your limits. Start to count your drinks: 0 under 21, no more than one for women, two for men in a 24 hour period. Next, check out the size of the drink you consume: No more than 12 oz. per beer, 5 oz. per glass of wine, and 1.5 oz. 80-proof liquor. Always know the alcohol percentage of the alcohol you are consuming. Last, always ensure you have a designated driver if you plan to drink alcohol away from your home. If you see a shipmate that doesn’t have a plan or is struggling with alcohol related problem, help them out and make sure he/she gets the help he/she needs.

  2. Tips for Responsible Drinking: 1. Pace your drinking, allow time between drinks. 2. Consider alternating non-alcoholic "decoy" drinks with those containing alcohol, i.e. drinking plain orange juice every other drink. 3. Don't drink on an empty stomach.  Foods with fats and/or proteins slow alcohol absorption. 4. Keep track of how much you are drinking. Know how much alcohol is poured into every glass.5. Dilute distilled beverages, don't drink them straight.6. Be aware of possible interactions between alcohol and other drugs (including certain foods and over-the-counter medications).7. Drink only if YOU want to, don't let others dictate your choice.8. Keep active. Don't just sit down and drink all night. If you keep active, you will drink less and will be more aware of your level of intoxication.9. Keep out of "Chugging" contests or other drinking "games." Stop drinking before the party is over, to allow your liver time to burn off some of the alcohol. Drink non-alcoholic beverages the last hour or so.10. Keep in mind that an added ice cube, a slightly smaller glass, or a "decoy" drink will go undetected by others. This may help you to resist the well-meaning efforts of others at the party who can't stand to see someone without a drink in their hand.
