Classification • It is estimated that there are between 5 to 30 million organisms on this planet. • Nearly 2mil have been named and identified • How many more are there? What will we do when we find them? Classification – the grouping of organisms based on similarities Taxonomy – a branch of Biology that groups and names organisms
Classification of Living Things Broadest Grouping; 6 kingdoms; least related Specific Most specific grouping; Most closely related; Able to breed; Make up the scientific name
Developed a system for naming organisms based on physical characteristics and familial relationships called BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE OR A SCIENTIFIC NAME • In this system organisms receive two names • The first name represents their GENUS • The second name represents their SPECIES
Naming Rules • Common names do not tell you how organisms are related. Different countries call the same organisms different names. This is CONFUSING!! • Therefore scientists agreed to use LATIN based names since Latin was a common thread in many languages. Also this language is “dead” (no longer spoken) so it won’t change
