USDA-NRI seed • grant, $50K/2 yr • Less competitive. • Results led to a std • grant @ $220K, ’02 • Panel ’03 • Equip. grant ’04 USDA NSF DOE MI Life Sci Corr CPBR Others • What did it take • for me to get an NSF grant? • 7 years • 7 unsuccessful • attempts (5 as • PI, 2 as co-PI) My Grant Proposal Record C-J Tsai, FY97-FY07 $6M as PI; $6M as co-PI thousands external, competitive grant agencies funded declined A failed proposal may be the next successful one! Re-submission’s have a higher rate of success. excluding: industrial funds, formula funds, pre-proposals, MTU grants, Minor-PI, etc. # proposals worked on: 4 4 9 8 4 5 7 7 7 8 5 # proposals funded: 1 4 4 3 3 4 1 4 3 4 2 CJ Tsai, 2008
A few thoughts… • 10-15% proposals are funded by most USDA and NSF panels • Higher funding rates for Postdoc/Seed/New investigator grants • Higher funding rates for NEW grant programs • How hard is it to get grants? • Why do I continue to write grants? • How to become successful in grant writing? • I like challenges, I like testing ideas, I like working with people • Numerous “second-chance” opportunities, very rewarding process • Be prepared, be persistent, and be patient = Be passionate • Able to critique yourself, willing to accept criticism and to change • Collaboration is VERY important CJ Tsai, 2008
and afterthoughts… • Find a niche in your area of study, build expertise • Be familiar with your area, look around and ahead • Innovative combination of ideas and approaches • Be a pioneer, don’t be a follower • Be moderate on budget request • The reward and surprises often outweight frustration! • USDA-NRI: $240K requested, awarded $171K $220K • NSF: $1,999K requested, $2,114K awarded (plus $50K REU) • DOE: $1,326K requested, $1,386K awarded • Have fun!
