Punctuation Handbook • Hey: To save paper, we will no longer pass out “punctuation mark explanation sheets.” You will now write down the 3 rules in your comp book, and then transfer them into your Punctuation Handbook when you are ready to make the page for that mark. • Questions?

Notes: Conjunctive Adverbs • When you take notes, copy the rule, and come up with an exampleof your own. You can use that in your handbook! • Rule #1: Conjunctive adverbs join two clauses. • Examples: • I enjoy classical; however, I prefer jazz. • I hurt myself dancing; nevertheless, I decided to go on the hike.
Notes: Conjunctive Adverbs • Rule #2: Conjunctive adverbs can be used within a sentence to provide emphasis. • Examples: • The new building will, furthermore, provide storage facilities. • I was up all night grading papers, and therefore feel quite tired.
Notes: Conjunctive Adverbs • Rule #3: When connecting two clauses, use a semicolon before, and a comma after the conjunctive adverb. • Examples: • Susan is bilingual; consequently, she has more job opportunities than others. • Jake won’t see the movie because he doesn’t like dramas; besides, he thinks it’s a “chick flick.”
