Academic Work Ethic • You are college bound! • Bring your best self to school each day. • School is your job during the school day. • You must do your best work at all times. • Failure is not an option. In high school if you fail a class you must retake that class to graduate. • All students must bring their text and readers to class daily.

  4. Academic Routine • All students should complete homework in a quiet environment with few distractions. • Students should not listen to music, use the computer, TV or other media while reading or writing. • Quiet ambient music or instrumental music can be helpful to mask distracting noises. • Students should sit up and have a quiet and well-lit environment. Laying on a couch, bed or floor reinforces a poor work habit. • Yes…they will argue about this-but they are wrong!

Class Norms/Expected Behaviors • Show respect • Demonstrate a positive attitude • Model an academic posture • Stay attentive and on task • Have all supplies and materials • Submit all work on time • Maintain an organized binder • Arrive promptly to class • Keep realm tidy • Silence your devices • Be aware of all deadlines and assignments • Raise your hand to speak • Use a formal and appropriate register • Participate effectively • Demonstrate personal responsibility

Emphasized Quarterly Topics Semester 1/Quarter 1 Semester 1/Quarter 2 9 week timeline Topic: Going to extremes & survival: exploring the causes and effects of risk-taking, exploration, and survival for personal gain and for the benefit of a larger cause. Exams: CFA 1: Week 12 CFA 2: Week 15 Q2 EOC Exam: Week 18. MC and timed essay. December 13-15 9 week timeline Topic: Immigration - exploring patterns of human migrations and its effects on communities and relationships Exams: CFA 1: Week 3 CFA 2: Week 6 Q1 Exam: Week 9. MC and timed essay. September 15-21

Writing Tasks and Rubrics Semester 1/Quarter 1 Semester 1/Quarter 2 Topic: Going to extremes & survival: exploring the causes and effects of risk-taking, exploration, and survival for personal gain and for the benefit of a larger cause. Students will write both timed and prepared essays scored with the appropriate CAHSEE rubric or SUHSD precis rubric. Response to Literature Literary précis • Topic: Immigration - exploring patterns of human migrations and its effects on communities and relationships • Students will write both timed and prepared essays scored with the appropriate CAHSEE rubric. • Persuasive essay • Formal business letter
