What are teams? • Number of persons associated together in work or activity • Examples: • Local community • Workplace • Sports • Club/organization
Teams • Great leadership builds great teams • Leaders: • Correct course of action • Make difficult decisions • Establish standards of performance to be met • Constantly improving • Should strive to build high performance teams
Team building • Requires management of personalities • Requires knowing how each person thinks and how to utilize their competencies
5 Stages of Team Development • Forming • Storming • Norming • Performing • Transforming
Forming • Tasks: • Establish base level expectations • Identify similarities • Agree on common goals • Behaviors: • Making contact and bonding • Developing trust • Members dependent
Storming • Tasks: • Identifying power and control issues • Gaining communication skills • Identifying resources • Behaviors: • Expressing differences of ideas, feelings, and opinions • Reacting to leadership • Members independent or counter-dependent
Norming • Tasks: • Members agree about roles and processes for problem-solving • Behaviors: • Decisions are made through negotiation and consensus building
Performing • Tasks: • Achieve effective and satisfying results • Members find solutions to problems using appropriate controls • Behaviors: • Members work collaboratively • Members care about each other • Group establishes a unique identity • Members are independent
transforming • Ending and closure of team’s existence • Sad and awkward • Difficulty or avoidance of saying goodbye
6 Ways Successful Teams Are Built to Last • Be aware of how you work • Get to know the rest of the team • Clearly define roles and responsibilities • Be proactive with feedback • Acknowledge and reward • Always celebrate success
Be aware of how you work • Evaluate yourself and look at areas you can improve • Hold yourself accountable to change your approach if necessary • Lead from a position of strength and respectability • Be your own boss • Be flexible • Know who you are as a leader
Get to know the rest of the team • Encourage cohesiveness • Understand the needs of your team • Accept that differences exist • “Think of a team as puzzle pieces that can be placed together in a variety of ways.”
Clearly define roles and responsibilities • People’s ideal role may lie outside their job description • Responsibilities should be dependent upon one another • “A team should operate as a mosaic whose unique strengths and differences convert into a powerful united force.”
Be proactive with feedback • Key to assuring any team is staying on track • Should be proactive and constant • Art of great communication • Can be formal or informal • Serve as team’s greatest supporter for continuous improvement • “Take the time to remind someone of how and what they can be doing better. Learn from them. Feedback is two-way communication.”
Acknowledge and reward • People love recognition and appreciate respect • Give teammates praise they earn and deserve • Reassure team that you are paying attention to their efforts • Builds loyalty and trust • “When people are acknowledged, their work brings them greater satisfaction and becomes more purposeful.”
Always celebrate success • Take a step back and reflect on what you’ve accomplished and learned • Celebrate success that comes about from effort, sacrifice, and determination • “Celebration is a short-lived activity. Don’t ignore it. Take the time to live in the moment and remember what allowed you to cross the finish line.”
