WHAT IS MALNUTRITION??? • Malnutrition is the condition that results from taking an unbalanced diet in which certain nutrients are lacking, in excess (too high an intake), or in the wrong proportions!!!
FACTORS AFFECTING PREVALENCE OF MALNUTRITION IN BOTSWANA • POVERTY- Less privileged people mostly have an unvaried diet or basically insufficient food. • EDUCATION • RESIDENCE LOCATION
The Kgalagadi North district had the highest incidence - 12.1 percent - of "severe to complete malnutrition". The child growth-failure rate of 17 percent was also high, and reported to be increasing. The south-central district of Bobirwa recorded a growth-failure rate of 13.5 percent. On the other hand, the more affluent diamond-mining centre of Jwaneng had the lowest incidence of malnutrition, with only 0.2 percent of children found to be suffering deficiencies. The survey also revealed a low incidence of malnutrition in Gaborone, the capital city.
NEGLIGENCE-Irresponsible parents !!! • DISHING OUT OF FOOD IN A TYPICAL TSWANA HOUSEHOLD—Who gets the largest and best portions of everything??-Kids?Men?Women?Guests? • TABOOS - Do’s and dont’s concerning food , for instance a pregnant woman should not eat colon because if the child is a boy he will have a long penis!! Other food that should not be eaten include eggs…… • BELIEFS- ‘’Mopakwana’’—wasting and stunted growth of a kid is seen as a problem not associated with diet
STEREOTYPES—Kids led to believe they are snobbish or ‘’COCONUTS” just on the basis of diet!! • DIARRHOEA EPIDEMIC-heavy rainfall leading to formation of dirty puddles combined with poor sanitation and hygiene , gives a fertile ground for the spread of diarrhoea!!
ADAPTATION OF THE WESTERN TYPE OF LIVING-fast foods, refined foods, sedentary lifestyle…. • BOTS SOCIETY’S VIEW ON WEIGHT GAIN??- weight gain is also seen as a positive thing , people think weight gain signifies good life and happiness!! ‘’full bodied” women over slender ones also referred to as “Twigs”???
HEALTH CONSEQUENCES • High infant mortality rate • Severe protein-energy malnutrition especially among children • major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and worse, certain forms of cancer…
WHAT’S BEING DONE?? • On going parents educational programme about kids diet at health centers. • Food rations for HIV/AIDS patients • Supplementary feeding for kids aged under 5 • Food rations for the poor and orphans
