Citizens: Patricians and Plebians – Civil war/social unrest • Plebian • As citizens, they participated in the assembly as well • As the empire grows more rich, (more slaves), they become unemployed and angry • Lower/MiddleClass • Skilled Labor • Merchants • Farmers • Patrician • As the empire grew more rich, so did they • Upper Class • Aristocratic (prestigious, “superior”) families • Rich, so they are a bigger influencein assembly(Romangovernment)

Roman Legions –Units of soldiers in the roman military • Beginnings: • Loyal to Rome (served in the army in return for land) • Disciplined, Organized • Empire becomes too big to controlso Rome hires foreign soldiers • Mercenary: A professional soldierhired to serve in a foreign army • Soldiers no longer loyal to Rome—their allegiance can be ‘purchased”

  10. The Emperors The common people loved (most) emperors because they gave them what they wanted/needed-Jobs, food, land—”bread and circuses” Some were good, some were bad Many assassinated! Hard to please senate AND commoners
