What Subject-based Banding means for your child? • Every child will be encouraged to do the subjects at the levels that best meet his abilities • Removal of streams in Primary 5 and 6
Why introduce Subject-based Banding? • To provide more flexibility to pupils with strengths and abilities that vary across subjects • To encourage greater interaction among pupils with different strengths

Selection Criteria • Pupil must achieve at least Band 2 (70marks and above ) in Mother Tongue and English Language.
Selection Criteria • Pupil must pass all 4 subjects at 50 marks and above.

Semester Assessment 2 30% Basic Items for all subjects • 70% of the total marks consist of questions that are aligned with the syllabus • 30% of the total marks are basic items • Basic items are short, simple and straightforward.
Semester Assessment 2 30% Basic Items for all subjects • If pupils do not demonstrate mastery of this basic content, in any of the subjects, English, Math, Science and Mother Tongue, it is better to offer them Foundation English/ Foundation Math / Foundation Science / Foundation Mother Tongue. • discretion will still be with the school/or parents when deciding subject combination • decision should be based on all relevant information such as their overall performance.
Guidelines for Movement After P5For pupils taking at least 1 Standard subject: • Pass at least 1 standard subject at the end of P5 same subject combination at P6 • Fail all subjects at the end of P5 switch to a less demanding subject combination at P6

Basic Tips • Broad based reading of both fiction and non-fiction texts • Engage in oral discussion of texts or what they have observed or experienced in daily living • Practice via assessment books is encouraged but should not be excessive and should go beyond ticks and crosses – encourage active discussions of passages or vocabulary/grammar

Use of Calculators in Primary Mathematics RATIONALE Achieve a better balance between emphasis on computational skills and problem solving skillsin teaching and learning and in assessment; Widen the repertoire of teaching and learning approaches to facilitate the use of investigation and problems in authentic situations; Help students, particularly those with difficulty in mathematics, develop greater confidence in doing mathematics.
Use of Calculators in Primary Mathematics(Primary 5 & 6) PSLE FORMAT • Paper 1 is the non-calculator component to ensure that important computational skills continue to receive emphasis • Paper 2 is the component which allows the use of calculators. • The two papers will be taken on the same day with an administrative break between the papers.
Basic Tips • Understand concepts, not just doing exercises • Practise Maths problem sums daily • Practise Mental Maths Skills (number bonds and multiplication tables) • Checking of answers using working forward and alternative methods • Good time management during examinations
