Objective • Majority of school programs focus on college-bound students or programs for the special needs; • Students in-between those groups are less program focused; they have to gain skills and experience outside of the school system • Hampton Roads Area holds tremendous opportunity for these students for careers • IOW could make these students bound for our industrial partners in Hampton Roads highly competitive for available jobs
Concept • Make it interesting and fun for students in a “Real World” setting • Class instruction instilled with observation and activity • A curriculum based on the needs of the Industrial Partners • Interaction with plant supervisors and workers • Problem-solving “at-the-plant” • Benefit the industrial partners • Problem-solving “for-the-plant” • Fresh ideas and extra eyes on operations • Generate potential workforce with desired skills • Follows successful initiatives developed in Scott County, KY through partnerships with the Georgetown Toyota plant
Process & Timeline • Jun 2012: Initiate Partnerships -- Establish industrial partnerships (for both Smithfield HS and Windsor HS) • Jul-Aug 2012: Analyze School Customer Needs -- Interviews and analysis to determine core competencies • Sep-Dec 2012: Develop Implementation Strategy and Curriculum -- Identify realistic target group within the IOW County Schools, the learning objectives, instructional methods, and safety/legal challenges • Jan-Jun 2013: Implementation (Spring Semester) – Balance classroom with “in-the-plant” problem solving activities
