  1. Lesson 29c Word Choice • Today we will learn to change vague words into more precise words to make our writing sound better. • Vague words are = unspecific, unclear • Precise words are = distinct, descriptive • The worst vague word ever = “things” What “things”? We must use more specific words.

  2. Which word BEST replaces the word “things” in these sentence? Planets and moons traveling through black holes may sound boring, but these things are really interesting. Radioactivity and uranium may sound like science fiction, but these things are very real.

  3. Which word BEST replaces the word “things” in these sentence? • 1. Math and English homework may seem meaningless, but these things are very important. • 2. Hard work and discipline may sound tiring, but these things will pay off later in life.

  4. Using the thesaurus • The thesaurus shows better, more precise words to replace vague, boring ones. • Look through your thesaurus to find more precise terms for the following vague words. Write down as many for each as you can: • Good • Bad • Interesting • Said • Really

  5. Classwork: • Write a one-chunk paragraph on your favorite theme park. (Make it up if necessary.) Remember to do CD’s (facts) in RED first, then do CM’s (opinions) in GREEN. Your paragraph should have 5 sentences, with NO VAGUE WORDS.

  6. Tonight’s homework: • Write another 1-chunk, 5-sentence paragraph (WITH NO VAGUE WORDS) about an imaginary neighbor on your street. Remember about the green & red. Instructions are on my website for you to consult from home.
