LESSON 1.1 Matter has mass and volume.
MATTER Def: anything that has mass and takes up space Examples: air, pencils, books, skate boards, and YOU All matter is made of atoms.
MEASURING MASS Def: how much matter an object contains Unit of measure- gram (g) Tool used for measuring- Triple Beam Balance Mass always stays the same
MEASURING WEIGHT Def: downward pull on an object due to gravity Measured with a scale (usually a spring scale) Unit of measure- Newton (N) Weight changes as the pull of gravity changes

MEASURING VOLUME Def: amount of space matter occupies Can be determined 2 ways: 1) Formula: L x W x H length x width x height Tool: metric ruler Unit: cm³

MEASURING VOLUME 2) Volume by Displacement • used for irregularlyshaped objects • Tool – graduated cylinder • Unit – mL • Measure amount of water to start, then measure water level after the object is added, then subtract. The difference = volume
