Lesson 1.1 Welding Terminologies
Base metal = Metal of workpieces or weldment • Which characteristics need to know ? • Mechanical • Strength • Ductibility • Resilence • Chemical compositions • Ferrous Non ferrous • Low alliage Alliage • Weldability • How easy the metal can be welded • Which process is suitable • Which quality we can expect • What need to be cared for welds quality satisfactory Base metal
Filler metal = additional Metal comprising welds Filler metal Filler metal Electrode Rod Wire Insert filler
Flux = Chemical materials applied during welding Welding Flux • Flux Requrements • It remains stable and does not change to a vapor rapidly within the temperature range of the welding procedure. • It dissolves all oxides and removes them from the joint surfaces. • It adheres to the metal surfaces while they are being heated and does not ball up or blow away. • It does not cause a glare that makes it difficult to see the progress of welding or brazing. • It is easy to remove after the joint is welded. • It is available in an easily applied form. Welding flux Coated Coated electrode Core Tubular electrode / wire Powder / grain SAW flux Paste Gas welding / Brazing
