  1. If you need to contact me • My email is m.bilan@alumni.ubc.ca • I will be available 30 minutes after school ends to answer any questions you may have • You can also reach out to Mr. MacPhee, who can pass on any questions or concerns you might have to me

  2. Some ground rules • Mr. MacPhee's class rules still apply • I have zero tolerance for any racial, religious, ethnic, or gender/sexuality based slurs or negative comments • We are both a class and a community; achieving that is impossible if we are using those words in this classroom • Ultimately, a climate of respect is what we should strive for

  3. And now a little about you! • Take a piece of paper, and fold it so it can stand up • Write your name on it in large letters, and draw an ‘artifact’ • This ‘artifact’ can be anything important to you or representing something about you, like an instrument, food, sports gear etc. • After everyone is finished, we will go around and everyone will get the chance to explain their artifact • Please keep them on your desk for the first several classes that I teach; it will help me learn everyone’s name

  4. Why and how do we live where we live? • Think about where you live right now; why do you live there? What makes it a good (or bad?) place to live? How do you and your family/friends adapt to life there? Think about your home, your neighbourhood, and Vancouver in general, and write down your thoughts on the first section of the worksheet • With a partner, discuss and compare your what you wrote down in the first section; what things did you have in common? What did you have that was different?

  5. Why and how do we live where we live? • All people need some form of food, companionship, and shelter/housing • But how people achieve can vary greatly depending on where they live • How might someone who lives in a desert live differently from you based on the reasons you wrote down?

  6. Why and how do we live where we live? • Climate is one of the main factors that determine how people live. • What are some ways that a region’s climate can affect how the people who live there? An Inuit igloo in the Arctic Pueblan Housing in Arizona

  7. Why and how do we live where we live? • Geographical location is another strong factor that determines how people live • What are some ways that your location affects how you live? Think both in general and from your own experience. • How far you live from the coast, from sources of food, whether you live in a mountainous or flat region all can have effects on how people live

  8. To your stations! • Based on the First People culture you have drawn, move to that culture’s station. • Looking at the evidence at each station, write down on your worksheets how you think each culture lived and/or how each culture adapted to the region in which they lived • Remember to consider aspects like climate, region, physical location • Please be careful with the sheets; they will be used by the next class

  9. Jigsaw time!

  10. Homework for next class • Complete the 3 – 2 – 1 worksheet for Friday’s class • 3 things you learned, two interesting thoughts, one question you’re unsure of • It will be collected at the start of next the class
