3. Classifying Rocks The properties that geologists use to identify rocks include color and crystal size. The color of a rock indicates the minerals it contains.
However, because the colors of most minerals can vary, a rock’s color is not always a reliable way to identify it. A better way to identify rocks is by the size of the crystals or other particles they contain.
4. Classifying Rocks The size, shape, and arrangement of the crystals and other particles that make up a rock give the rock its texture. A rock’s texture reveals what the rock is made from and how and where it formed.
