IGNEOUS ROCKS • Form from the cooling of molten magma • Contain individual mineral crystals • Texture- course, medium and fine grain • Overall Color- light, medium, and dark • Extrusive / Volcanic rock forms when molten rock is cooled quickly on the surface. (small crystals) • Intrusive / Plutonic rocks form when magma cools slowly far beneath the earth surface. (Larger crystals)

METAMORPHIC ROCK • Form from older rock either igneous or sedimentary when under intense heat and pressure or do to chemical action over time. This typically happens at great depths beneath the earths’ surface. • Have foliation- minerals arranged in bands and streaks • Shale- Slate- Phyllite- Schist- Gneiss

SEDIMENTARY ROCKStrata! Layers • These rocks are formed when sediment (bits and pieces of other rock) are cemented and compressed under pressure. This is called Lithification. • 3 types • Clastic – Example Sandstone, Conglomerate • Chemical- Example limestone • Organic- Example Coal

How do rocks change? • This process of changing happens in a cycle where rocks can be changed from sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous in multiple processes. • Any rock can be changed into another either through weathering and erosion, compaction or lithification, melting and cooling, compression and being squeezed under pressure.
