  3. Boyars Old nobility Largely control most of the government at this time. 1670 to 1671 Stepan Razin led a Peasant & Cossacks revolt Mutiny was also brewing amongst Sterltsy Sterltsy – guards of Moscow garrison The boyar government

  4. Michael Romanov r.1613-1654 • Michael was the first ruler in Romanov dynasty • Michael had two successors Alexis I (1654-1676) and Theodore III (1676-1682)

Peter the Great was so Maj cont. • Co-reign with Ivan V from 1682-1696 • Peter had conflicts with Russian nobles • He was passionate in his efforts to westernize Russia • He increased military strength • Started to develop a economy of Russia • He had help rebuild the Russian Army. • Secure power for the tsar away from the boyar and Sterltsy

Peter solidifies his position as Tsar • He asserted his power over the boyars • He made the “Boyar Look “ more western • He demand that they serve the state with A Table of Ranks. • This document made each individual boyar their corporation to serve the state • Boyars never became completely loyal to peter.

  8. Peter tries to deal with the Bah-na-nas Sterltsy • In 1698 awell peter was on a trip around Europe the sterltsy rebel • When peter came back he stop the battle the with public executed and 1200 were put to death .

  9. Peter the Great Admiration • Was organized into colleges which were bureau of people that were each in change of their own • Then created a central senate with nine member they were in charge of the government when the tsar was away with the army.

  10. Peter grew the economy to support the military • Peter helped make Russia the largest iron producer in Europe • He sent some Russians aboard for technical training. • He tried to attract west European crafts people to Russia.

  11. Peter the Great military efforts • Peter created a all new Russian navy • He wanted to secure ports to trade with the west and give Russia more influence. • This led to wars with the ottoman empires

  12. Peter the Greats Legacy • After Peter’s death nobles and soldiers regain control over the monocracy. • In the end he had modernize Russia but was unable to make it stable.
