Objective SPI 3002.6.4 Identify and analyze text structure in informational texts.
Text Structure • Chronological—Time order Use a timeline to show the order of important events.
Compare/Contrast • Compare—to show similarities • Contrast—to show differences Use a graphic organizer with lists to show compare and contrast.
Sequence • Sequence—Step-by-step Many “how-to” guides or recipes use sequence as a text structure because the steps are to be followed in order.
Cause and Effect • Cause and Effect—The text shows causal relationships. For example, texting while driving is a distraction which can cause accidents. What other causal relationships do you know? Write one in your notes.
Problem/Solution • Problem/Solution—A problem is presented, and solutions are proposed to fix them. For example, for the problem of texting and driving, parents may propose that teenagers do not put their phone in arm’s reach in the car as they drive.
Practice • Complete the “Identifying Text Structure” worksheets. On “Text Structure #1, use the printed graphic organizers. On “Text Structure #2”, create your own graphic organizers.
