Bell Work for Tuesday, Oct 1 • Read the selection from Thomas Paine’s Common Sense on page 171. • Answer accompanying questions A and B.
Frayer Model Instructions • Fold your paper in half. Then fold it in half again. • Draw an oval in the center of the page, where the two creases meet. It should be big enough to write in. • Write “Declaration of Independence” inside the oval. • Draw a line down each of the two creases to create 4 boxes on your paper.

According to this section of the Declaration, what is the purpose of government? What should the people do if the government is not fulfilling its purpose? Draw a picture about it. What does the word preamble mean? Summarize what the Preamble says. Draw a picture about the Preamble. Declaration of Independence 3. List of Grievances 4. Declaring Independence p. 172 and 174, 176 What is a grievance? Give four examples of grievances the colonists had about the King. Draw a picture about these grievances. p. 172 and 174, 178 What are the rights colonists now say they have as a new country? What do the colonists say that they “mutually pledge to one another?” Draw a picture about this section of the Declaration.
Preamble • Introduction of the document. • Explains why this was being written.
Declaration of Natural Rights This section states the colonists’ basic beliefs: • All people have natural rights • “All men are created equal.” • Government should protect those rights. • When government fails to protect people’s rights, the people should abolish the government.
List of Grievances This is the long list of complaints the colonists have about England: • The king ignored their rights to trial by jury • The king created taxes without their consent • Petitions sent to the King have been ignored so he is now considered “unfit to be the ruler of a free people”
Resolution of Independence Puts together the colonists’ beliefs and grievances to show that the only course left is to dissolve all political ties with Britain. The colonies are now “free and independent states.”
