Segall Defines Melancholy • “Melancholy is generally conceived as a failure to come to terms with the grief caused by a ‘loss of a loved person, or to the loss of some abstraction . . such as liberty, an ideal, and so on,’ according to Freud” (43). • Melancholy defined again—“takes an unresolved conflict, where one feels anger and desire for an accepting love, and internalizes it” (45)
