  3. Paleo Indians • First human beings in Georgia • 12,000-8,000 BCE • Nomadic hunters and gatherers • Primary weapons consisted of spears made of wood, stone, or flint. • Homes made of animal skins

  4. Archaic Indians • 8,000-1,000 BCE • Descended from Paleo Indians • Nomadic • Group is divided into 3 categories: • Early, Middle, and Late • Developed new technological tools to adapt • Atlatl: spear that could be thrown at high speeds • Grooved Axe • Pottery • Hooks and nets for fishing

  5. Woodland Indians • 1000 BCE- 750 CE • Village Dwellers • Technological Advancements • Use of bow and arrow (hunting) • Pottery • Storage • Horticulture and farming • Depended on corn • First mound builders

  6. Mississippian Indians • 800 CE- 1600 CE • Most complex group • Lived in mound towns • Large scale farmers • Mound builders • Traded extensively throughout North American • Society was organized as a “chiefdom” with a structured hierarchical society • Small number of elites and the rest commoners • First group to encounter European explorers • Majority of Mississippian Indians died out due to diseases brought over by the Europeans
