The Breathing Behavior of a fish to different water conditions
Introduction Fish breathe with the use of their gills that dissolves the oxygen in the water. And the mouth that co-ordinates operculum that produces a stream of water and also it protects the gills. Although there is more oxygen in air than in water, a fish will suffocate in air. This is probably because the muscular system of mouth and operculum which can work in water will not function in air. Water Pollution is the contamination of water bodies like lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers, groundwater and etc. Pollution can also affect the survival of the species underwater. If the seawater is polluted, maybe all of the fishes will die or they will migrate to the other seawater.
Objective/Problem To test the breathing behavior of a fish in a different component of its condition (water with detergent and the normal water).
Hypothesis • Hо: There is no significant difference between the breathing behavior of a fresh water fish in a polluted water and in an ordinary water. • Ha: There is a significant difference between the breathing behavior of afresh water fish in a polluted water and in an ordinary water.
Materials • 2- Beaker • Thermometer (small) • Stirring Rod • Weighing Scale • Detergent (Surf Powder) • Tap Water • 3 - Fish
Methods • The two beakers was set as A and B. Beaker A – 700mL normal water Beaker B – 700mL normal water with detergent • The temperature of the two beakers was measured. • The fish was placed on the Beaker A, and its Breathing behavior was observed for two minutes. After that, the fish was placed again on the other Beaker (Beaker B). • All the measurements and results in the experiment was recorded.
Results This study shows the big difference on the breathing behavior of a fish in a different habitat. The fish when placed at the tap water did not change on its breathing behavior but when the fish was placed at the water with detergent there is a lot of reaction happened. Like, the fish is still alive but it was barely breathing. Later on, the fish was suffocated and its operculum was destroyed that causes its gills to show up.
Discussion The breathing behavior of the fish doesn’t change in the normal water, while in the water with detergent, it dramatically changes. This is because the muscular system of the mouth and operculum – which is an important part in the breathing mechanism, cannot work in all kinds of water specially in a very much polluted water like with a detergent. The detergent contain chemicals that are not suitable for the survival of the fish.
Conclusion In conclusion, the breathing behavior of a fish depends on the habitat that their dealing with. It is obvious that the fish cannot survive on a polluted water. Fishes are to be placed in a fresh water so that their life span will be longer.
