  3. Introduction I am creating this presentation to show a demonstration of an refurbished computer which I will be using the available utilities for the charity representative of ‘Techno for Tanzania’ who will be visiting. I will take some activities to do this which I will explain in the presentation. I will also be explaining the effects of each activities that I have taking on the performance of the computer. I will also explain why I have done the activities and what benefits they bring to the system. I have compared four software utilities and I have done this in table.

  4. Anti-virus To start the installation I inserted the F-Secure anti-virus CD into the CD-R drive and then the installation setup appeared and I followed the instructions to installed the anti-virus and finished the installation successfully. After going through some of the setup stages I got this part where I have to read and accept license policy and agreement or I cannot installed the software. Image of me installing F-Secure anti-virus.

  5. Anti-virus After I clicked next I got to this stage which where I decided what folder I want the files to upload to. On here it has an instruction on if I want to install the files on the chosen folder click next, if I want to change to another folder click browse and if I want to quit the setup click cancel. But I was happy with the folder which the files were going to upload in so I clicked next. Here it shows the progress of the files uploading to the selected folder.

  6. Anti-virus After the installing was complete this window opened. On the window it had an tick box which was asking me if I want to view the readme file after I have clicked finish. When I finished with installing antivirus F-Secure, I was ready to scan my computer for any infected files on my system. After scan was complete I got an report on the statistics.

  7. Anti-virus On the next step I chose for the scan to be weekly from the following options then clicked next. To keep my computer safe and protected I scheduled a full system scan to start every Friday from 10 am. I did this by going to the ‘Scheduled Task Wizard’ and I selected ‘Scan all local hard disks’ and clicked next. Image of me making a schedule for full system scan to run at 10 am every Friday.

  8. Anti-virus Next I decided what day of the week and what time of the day I want the scan to start. After I decided what time and day I got an review of what I have chosen for when I want to start the scan and then I got an tick box which asking me if I want ‘Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish’ I didn’t click on the tick box but I finished and clicked on the button.

  9. Formatting I have been formatting a floppy disk which I will be explaining how I did this. To start with I inserted a floppy disk into the disk drive and then right clicked on the device from my computer and selected format. Then an window opened showing the capacity, file system, unit size and etc it always has some format options. After I was finished with selecting the settings I clicked on start. When I clicked start I got an warning informing me that the formatting will erase all the data in the disk.

  10. Formatting Here it shows me the progress of formatting the disk with the chosen settings. After the formatting was complete I got message telling me that the it is complete. Image of me formatting a floppy disk.

  11. Creating folders Creating folders is a great way of managing files which I will be showing how I have made my folders for my files. In the area I wanted to create my folder I right clicked on a empty space and went to ‘New’ the ‘Folder’.

  12. Copy and delete files Sometimes it is important to copy a file from a folder to another and sometimes to be able to delete files that you don’t need anymore and is just a waste of space. I copied some of my files into my other folders so I have a backup and I did this by right clicking on the selected file then clicked ‘Copy’ and pasted the file in the chosen folder by right clicking then clicking ‘Paste’.

  13. Copy and delete files After I was done with copying some of my files into other folders I need to delete the files which I don’t need anymore and I did this by right clicking on the selected file then clicked ‘Delete’. A box appeared asking me if I want to delete the selected file which will be sent to the ‘Recycle Bin’ and this is made so if I accidently try to delete the wrong I still have a chance of keeping the file.

  14. Back-up compression A good way of backing up your files is by compressing (zipped). I have made compressed back-up of my folder. I did this by right clicking on the selected folder and went to ‘Send To’ then clicked ‘Compressed (zipped) Folder’. When the compression finished I got this zipped folder.

  15. Defragmentation Defrag is a excellent clean up tool and it is easy to use. I defragged my computer by going to ‘Start’ menu, ‘All Programs’, ‘Accessories’, ‘System Tools’ then selected ‘Disk Defragmenter’. Image of using the ‘Disk Defragmenter’ for my computer

  16. Defragmentation The disk defragmenter showed me the information about the drive I am trying to defrag. Before I defragged my drive I got it analysed by clicking on the ‘Analyze’ which then shows the disk usage before I defrag the drive and also after. The information about the defrag is colour coded which has the keys to understand which colour is which. When I was ready to defrag my drive I just clicked on ‘Defragment’ which done starts to defrag my drive. Defragment Analyze On the bottom of the window it shows me the progress of the defragmentation.

  17. Firewall Having a firewall is important so no unnecessary files or program can get to your computer. Most computers have one installed and if a computer doesn’t have one, it can be purchased either online or shopping. There is two ways of getting the software which is by downloading it and then start installing or by installing it from the CD. Image of me installing firewall onto my computer from the firewall CD with the setup files.

  18. Service pack 3 To keep your computer and all its features up to date is by installing service pack 3 which speeds up the performance and has better service. You can purchase service pack 3 online by going the Microsoft website and ordering the CD or by downloading it from the website and another way of purchasing it is by shopping for it. I inserted the CD for service pack 3 and setup window appeared automatically. I went through the setup installation as same as the other software installations and successfully installed service pack 3. Image of me installing service pack 3 from setup files on CD.

  19. Antivirus I have installed an F-Secure antivirus software so it protects the computer from any threats and malicious programs. This makes the performance of the computer better, it will be removing unwanted files and programs that just fill up space on the hard disk drive and the RAM. This is a great benefit to the computer as it identifies and eliminates malicious software’s which will just destroy the computer files and slow down the computer with adding unnecessary files and programs.

  20. Formatting I have formatted a floppy disk and I have done this so it will clean and empty the disk properly. This means that I will loose all the files and programs that I have stored in it. This will make the performance better then deleting one by one.

  21. Creating folders I have created folders and I have done so to manage my files into separate areas and to make it easier for me to find something. It is also a good way to keep the files tidy and not over the place.

  22. Copying and deleting I have copied files from folders to another or into another drive for example my removable disk and I have done this so that I can be able to access them from other places. But this will effect the computer because it will be using up space and may slow down the computer. I have deleted files that are no use to me or the computer to keep the folder tidy and to free up some space. But if I delete the wrong files it may effect any program or software from working.

  23. Back-up compression I have kept a backup of my files by compressing it which I did because to make sure that I have an backup of all the files that I need in case anything happens to the computer. I have compressed my backup files because it lessens the space it takes up on the drive.

  24. Defrag Defragging is a great clean up tool and to free up space which makes the computer performance better. Defrag rearranges the files into right folders and areas, it does this by putting the files into contents and this good because it makes a big amounts of space.

  25. Firewall I have installed firewall on to my computer and I have done this because it protects my computer from being hacked in. it also stops unwanted and unsafe programs from running. Firewall helps to stop computer attacks. The network traffic is inspected by your firewall which stops threats from going through.

  26. Service pack 3 I have installed service pack 3 on to my computer and I have done this because the service pack has got a lot of new and better updates for my computer which will make the performance of the computer much better. Service pack 3 has got the same updates and programs as the ones before with new security updates and hotfixes and some new enhancements. This will not change the look and how to access things, this will make the computer much better and performance much greater. Installing service pack 3 will install all the updates and programs that are missing from your PC.
