Follow Every child deserves the opportunity to develop into a responsible individual in a safe and secure environment, but according to Census 2011, nearly 33 million Indian children between the ages of 6 and 18 are employed as child labourers. These children can be seen doing odd jobs around the house as well as at factories, construction sites, and tea stands. Children are forced to work long, tedious hours in dangerous situations. Additionally, they are required to engage in labour in environments inappropriate for children. They are also forced to spend more time away from their families at a time when it is recommended that children live in healthy and caring environments during their formative years. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are denied their fundamental right to attend school and aspire for a better life. We must end child labour because it exposes children to abuse and exploitation, which can have a variety of negative effects on them. Innumerable incidents of child abuse in Indiago unreported but continue to leave a jarring mark on respective children. One of the main causes of this is extreme poverty, which pushes parents in many rural and semi-urban communities to marry and work their children off, causing malnutrition and illiteracy in the process. Addressing this issue is particularly vital because children need to attend school to obtain an education and have better life opportunities. A leading NGO in India, CRY, has been working hard to raise awareness in various communities and to involve key players, such as policymakers and community leaders, to help create a difference through necessary intervention. Your generous contribution can help protect children from dropping out of school and also bridge their learning gap through CRY’s bridge learning campaign. With your help, CRY aims at reaching more children to help rescue and rehabilitate them, thus ensuring they attend school rather than engage in labour, thus giving them a chance at a better future.
