Primer Purpose • To introduce eCourses gradebook vocabulary and basic concepts as a prerequisite for face to face or web training sessions.
BASIC TERMS • Grader Report • View Only • Editing Mode • Course (Master) Category • Category (Optional) • Grade Item • Manual • Manual Import • Automatic Import • Linked • Grade
Think of a category as a file folder, and a grade item as a page in that folder which the grades are written on.
Organization of Gradebook Categories below Course Category are optional. Typically, a category should have more than 1 grade item in it.
Grade Book Item Types – Manual Grades • Manual Grade • A manual grade is one that is entered in the gradebook setup interface. It is not linked to a tool in the course content area. Manual grades are good for participation grades, or assignments not completed in eCourses.
Grade Book Item Types – Imported • Imported Grade – Automatic & Manual • Automatic imports come from 3rd party tools, primarily textbook ancillaries like CONNECT, REVEL,MindTapand InQuizative. Some send over a single grade for all assignments, others send over a grade per assignment. Some will update automatically, others require manual inititation of the process. • Manual imported grades can be uploaded via CSV or TSV files from third party tools that don’t integrate directly into eCourses. Interface from Manual Import
Importing & Exporting Grades • If you wish to upload from Excel, • Setup the Gradebook in eCourses • Export it • Fill in grades and then • Import from that sheet
Grade Item Types – Linked • Linked Grade • A linked grade is created any time a forum, assignment, or quiz is created in eCourses. It is linked to that item on the course page. When the tool is graded the grade automatically moves to the gradebook. • Total points for linked grades are usually controlled by the tool, rather than the gradebook entry. We’ll cover each of these in the tutorial. • Grade Override: Occurs when you enter a grade other than the grade sent over from the linked tool. Overrides appear in brown highlight.
Gradebook Views • Grader Report • View only • Spreadsheet View • Single View • Data Entry by Student • Data Entry by Grade Item • User Report (View Only) • Student view • Instructor View
Single View – Allows Edits Assignment Single View Student Single View
User Report – View Only Student View Instructor View Taskstream 1 is hidden Student doesn’t see it
Gradebook Categories & Aggregation Types • Every course has a master category or a course category – by default named the same as the course • You must have at least this category in every gradebook. • Additional categories can be added. • Set up category settings as shown to the left:
Aggregates Points System: Natural (Points/Total) with only the Course Category • Category System: • Mean of grades • Weighted mean of grades • Simple weighted mean of grades
Setting Aggregates: Considerations • The eCourses gradebook can appear to mimic a points system, but it’s designed to operate on a percentage basis by default. • The gradebook does not dynamically average according to possible points to date, only total possible points. Total Points in Course: 500 Points Earned to Date: 250 Points Earnable to Date: 300 Actual Grade = 250/300 = 83.33% Reported Grade = 250/500 = 50.0%
Hiding and Showing Linked Grades • Grades can be hidden at the activity level (course page) for linked items only.
