  2. 3RD STRATEGIC PHASE Supporting regional cooperation in global change research on issues particularly relevant to the region Strengthening appropriate interactions among scientists and policy-makers, and providing scientific input to policy decision-making and scientific knowledge to the public APN GOALS Improving the scientific and technical capabilities of nations in the region, including the transfer of know-how and technology Cooperating with other global change networks and organisations

NEW ACTIVITIES New activities focussed under scientific research and capacity development are being undertaken in two of the four new scientific themes highlighted in the Third Strategic Plan (3SP) as follow: • Theme 4: Resources Utilization and Pathways for Sustainable Development • Global change implications of efficient resource utilization • Action to establish international sound material cycle society • Theme 2: Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Land Use • Key Focus Areas: Forestry and REDD-Plus

  5. Activities that maybe supported The kinds of activities that may be supported under the above themes include:

SCBCIA – a focussed activity Scientific Capacity Development for Climate Change Impact and Vulnerability Assessment 7 Ongoing projects • Countries: • China • Indonesia • Philippines • Pakistan • Viet Nam • Thailand Training in the Concepts of Climate Change Impacts and Vulnerability and use of SIMCLIM SCBCIA 2009-FP06-PULHIN: Capacity Building on Integration of Science and Local Knowledge for Climate Change Impacts and Vulnerability Assessments

  7. Systematic Observations and Data Management • Strengthens current POLICIES in DATAMANAGEMENT • Provide access to all data (e.g. metadata) • Supports archiving and retrieval of data Stronger relationships with other organizations toward achieving common goals Allows download of data from APN-funded project websites

  8. Climate Synthesis • Synthesis of climate-related research and capacity development over 10 years • 56 completed projects • Synthesis report and book will be published in 2011 and 2012 APN Climate Synthesis Scoping Meeting 10-11 November 2009 APN Secretariat, Kobe, Japan Focus Chapters
