The Meeting Our meeting on 22nd February 2011 was to talk about Health. Before we talked about this we had an update about the last Board meeting and a presentation from the Customer Council. We heard about the elections and why some of the members decided to get involved.
The Health Check Norman Campbell then told us about the Yorkshire and Humber Health Self Assessment and reminded us about what we thought had been important when we looked at this last year.
What is health? Thomas Chalk from the PFT then gave a presentation about what health is and what kinds of services we get around our health. This meant that we were all talking about the same kind of things and all understood what we meant by health services.
What has been good? In groups we then talked about what had been good about the health services we have had over the last year. Staff spoke slowly to me to help me understand The Optician explained the eye test to me I think the NHS helpline is very good I’ve had a health check My dentist is very understanding I was happy with the information they gave me I complained and got a letter back The chiropodist explains things The Doctor explained the treatment to me I like to see the same Doctor I had a flu jab and a blood test
What has been bad? In groups we then talked about what had been bad about the health services we have had over the last year. The Optician did not explain what they were going to do Things not being explained I don’t like the waiting room The Dentist does not take NHS patients The hospital food was bad The support staff don’t let me answer Seemed to spend a long time waiting I have to wait a long time to see the Doctor The Dentist pulled my tooth and did not listen to me. I did not want it out The Doctor speaks to the person with me, not me
What should change? In our groups we then talked about ideas we had for things that could change or get better. Over lunch Thomas and Fiona looked at our ideas and pulled out the 5 most popular suggestions.
Voting Time After lunch, we heard what the 5 most popular suggestions were and we could then get up to vote for what we thought the most important was.
In 5th place Good places to get health services – clean, accessible, friendly and safe. This had 3 votes.
In 4th Place Accessible information This had 5 votes
In 3rd Place A choice of who you see This had 5 votes as well
In 2nd Place Good Information – easy to understand, who to ask for help, where to go for appointments, how to get a better service This had 7 votes
In 1st Place Staff Awareness – more training and resources for staff This had 10 votes
THE RESULT The Service User Reference Group decided that the most important area for change is around staff awareness and making health services more accessible for people with a learning disability.
