  1. Physiological System of Heart & Cardiovascular System

  2. Heart • Size - Clenched fist, slightly left • It beats about 4000 times an hour and about 100,000 times a day • It will beat over 2 billion times in a lifetime • Each heartbeat pumps half cup of blood • The force of your heartbeat is sufficient to shoot blood 30 feet into the air

  3. Heart

  4. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM- THE HEART

  5. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM • It has four valves:- • Tricuspid valve or right atrio-ventricular valve • Bicuspid mitral valve or left atrio-ventricular valve • Pulmonary valve or semilunar valve • Aortic valve • All these valves are unidirectional • Provides synchronous operation

  6. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM • 2 types of blood circulation • Pulmonary circulation • Right ventricle Pulmonary artery Lungs • Lungs Pulmonary veins Left atrium • Systemic circulation • Left atrium Left ventricle Aorta Arteries (Exchange of gases) • Veins Superior/Inferior venacavae Right atrium Right ventricle

  7. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM - CIRCULATORY SYTEM

  8. Circulation through Heart Although equal volumes of blood are flowing in the pulmonary and systemic circuits, the two ventricles have uneven workloads. Pulmonary Circuit: right, short low pressure circulation. Systemic Circuit: left, long pathway, five times as much resistance to blood flow, high pressure

  9. The Anatomy of the Heart The Surface Anatomy of the Heart

  10. The Anatomy of the Heart The Surface Anatomy of the Heart

  11. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM - CIRCULATORY SYTEM

  12. Heart’s Place in the Circulation Overview of the Cardiovascular System Superior vena cava aorta inferior vena cava

  13. Pulmonary Circulation • Pulmonary = Deoxygenated Blood • Involves Right Side of Heart • Pathway: • Superior / Inferior Vena Cava • Right Atrium  Tricuspid Valve • Right Ventricle  Pulmonary Semilunar Valve • Left Pulmonary Artery • Lungs

  14. Systemic Circulation • Systemic = Oxygenated Blood • Involves Left Side of Heart • Pathway: • Left Pulmonary Vein • Left Atrium  Bicuspid Valve • Left Ventricle  Aortic Semilunar Valve • Aorta • All Other Tissues

  15. Cardiac Valves [4 main valves] • When the heart is relaxed… • Blood passively fills atrium • Flows right past tricuspid / bicuspid valves • Semilunar Valves remain shut • When the heart contracts (pumps)… • Tricuspid / Bicuspid valves swing up and shut • Blood ejected out of ventricle • Semilunar Valves open up

  16. The Anatomy of the Heart The Valves of the Heart
